Brownfield:

SEC was contracted for the power supply to the new compaction circuit as well as the existing brownfield mill upgrades, including 15KV cables, cable tray, new cables to belt conveyor upgrade. The 15kv cable install underground came with its challenges due to existing 15kv cables and utilities in the excavation areas. The cable pulls ranged from an existing power supply house through a 300’ excavation, through multiple buildings and existing parts of the mill and finally into the new compaction circuit electrical room all without incident. Additionally, new cables/motor starters were installed due to an increase of HP size of existing conveyance systems.

Greenfield:

SEC was contracted to complete the electrical and instrumentation supply and installation of new cable trays, grounding, lighting,  junction boxes, teck cable, grounding, lightning protection and all terminations for the Circuit 3 compaction building. This included the installation of (3) Owner supplied 15kv unit substations/loadcenters which were installed through the side of the new electrical room via mobile crane. Installation of new 480 Volt MCC centres, VFD cabinets, PLC/DCS, UPS cabinet were also installed. The new compaction building was 9 levels high approximately 180’ in height. LED lighting was installed throughout the building in which illuminating all areas. A construction elevator was used to mobilize work personnel/materials. Each floor of the building had main runs of cable tray, multiple field trays, lighting, junction boxes, and cable/terminations. With over 100 new motors this project was a great stride for our electrical/instrumentation team completing it without incident.

The building lighting protection was installed with 2 mobile cranes with workers via worker basket. Coordination was key for the install as the conductor went from top to bottom and also included a few rings around the structure with other contractors in the area. SEC also provided commissioning assistance with our tradespeople for energizing/function testing off the new equipment through the new compaction building.
